Mr. Jean-Luc Legault presented a wonderful presentation on Astro- Archaeology. He went through the different cultures through different time periods, and showed us the different sites. He told us how each site worked to the best of our understanding.

He explains that the Sphinx may has been sculpted after the constellation of Leo rather than a lion. Also that the constellation Leo announced the coming of spring and that the Sphinx point due east towards the rising Sun.

Stonehenge calculated Equinox's and Soltices, Eclipses and other solar events. How the second circle of inner stones really added more precision to the machine.

He also spoke about; Newgrange - Ireland, a funeral chamber lite by the rising sun on the 21st of December every year marking the Winter Solstice.

Goseck - Germany marks the rising and setting of the sun on the winter solstice through the South-East and South-West doorways.

Carnac - France is still a mystery. It contains 1100 monoliths arranged in 11 rows spanning a kilometer each.

Easter Island contained approximately 500 megalith statutes of which about 100 still stand.

Samarcande - Ouzbekistan and the giant 48m Sextans.

Caracol - Mexico built in 1050 was an observatory for astronomy. He Mayans had two calendars based on the sun.

Chankillo - Peru on the coast of the pacific ocean. 13 mounds mark the 12 months of the year.

Machu Picchu - Peru

Big Horn Medicine Wheel - Wyoming part of 70 odd structures that cover an area from Wyoming to central Canada.

Cahokia - Illinois

Chaco Canyon - New Mexico

It was an outstanding presentation, I loved it. For local astronomy clubs of Quebec all over invite him for this wonderful presentation. We all enjoyed it very much.

Yeap, like many astronomy clubs around this wonderful globe of ours. The CAABM, also known as Le Club des Astronomes Amateur de Boucherville-Monteregie, is marking the official opening of our observing season with the infamous Messier Marathon.

Tonight, Phillip Graveline our secretary of the club is presenting the life of Charles Messier and his catalog of non-comet objects. His catalog of 109 (110) deep sky objects has now become what is known as The Messier Marathon.

This year, the New Moon falls on the 22nd of March which will make the week-end of March 24-25, 2012 the perfect week-end to complete the marathon weather permitting. I am definitely looking forward taking my little 8" Skywatcher Dob. out of moth balls and cleaning off the dust an putting it to work. My 5 year old daughter can't wait to observe with me too...

If you are going out this month, I definitely suggest that you try the marathon, it is a lot of fun, especially if you are doing it with friends...

Have a wonderful night looking up...

Sat, 05 Nov 2011 20:53:44 -0700 First fall observing night with The Boucherville Astronomy Club http://www.realmsofnarnia.org/first-fall-observing-night-with-the-bouchervi http://www.realmsofnarnia.org/first-fall-observing-night-with-the-bouchervi Here we are at the CAABM observing site on a wonderfully chilly night. Alain is here with his 20" Obsession and Denis with his Meade LX200 14".

Phil brought his Sony Alpha A55 DSLR and started shooting Messier 1.

Michel came with me, and Pierre came too...

Alain's 20" gave us a beautiful view of Jupiter and her Galillean moons. Also a couple of Messier galaxies.

When Phil finished up his photos, he turned the scope on to a couple of brilliant red stars. He even turned the scope on to a star in the Constellation of Gemini that contains an Exo-Planet 2.9 times the size of our Jupiter orbiting at the equivalent distance of our sun a little farther than Mars.

11:48pm and Alain's 20" has dewed over beyond thawing out. He will be calling it a night...

I think Michel and I will be heading out too as my feet are starting to cool down now...

A special thank you goes out to the observing member of the Boucherville Astronomy Club for a very interesting and entertaining evening... It was wonderful!!!

Our astronomy club CAABM of Boucherville was impressed by the presentation on the history of Sun Dials by sun dial maker Jean-Serge Dion of Drummondville, Qc. He explained the history of time keeping and how we learned of to track time through antiquity. We learned of to make solar clocks and solar calendars ourselves. Mr. Dion explained it in such a wonderful way that a child could build one. Although I wasn't able to stick around for the whole presentation, I very much enjoyed it...
